To be more specific, it lies on the Yamuna River in Mogul, the capital city of Agra. Agra is near the capital of India, New Delhi. This building attracts more than 1 million visitors a year, with it’s beauty and grace no wonder people from all over the world come to India just be stand in it’s power and grace.
The Taj Mahal was built under the directions of a man named Shah Jahan, the builder of this great edifice is unknown but many believe it was built by Ustad Ahmad Lahori. It’s said to have taken 22 years to complete, with all of the magnificent designs put into the Taj Mahal no wonder it took so long! Shah Jahan buit the Taj Mahal for his wife, Mumtaz Mahal, hense the name Taj Mahal. She died during childbirth and her burial place is located under the famous Taj Mahal dome, alongside her husband’s body too. Although this wonder of the world has so much beauty, it was neglected after Aurangzeb jailed Shah Jahan, and the Taj Mahal beganto decay during the Raj, which was when the British controlled India from 1858 to 1947. During the Raj, which means “rule or government” in Indian, the British were going to destroy the Taj Mahal so they could sell the thousands of pounds of marble to gain more wealth, but ended up not doing the act because there weren’t enough buyers wealthy enough to afford the lavish marble. After the Raj was over, the Taj Mahal gained back its popularity, with tourists coming in from all over. Elenor Roosevelt summed up the grace and exquisiteness of the Taj when she stated “ The white marble of the Taj symbolizes the purity of real love; and somehow love and beauty seem close together in this creation…As long as I live I shall carry in my mind the beauty of the Taj, and at last I know why my father felt it was the one unforgettable thing he had seen in India.”
